So what exactly is burnout? It can be described as a state of exhaustion, which can include mental, physical, and emothional aspects. Many describe burnout as being closely related to stress. Symptons can include job dissatisfaction, alienation and depression.

Someone suffering from burnout thought that they could make a difference, and many times the people were highly successful in their jobs. In extreme conditions, burn out sufferers can feel their situation is hopeless, and they begin to alienate those around them. They reach a breaking point and have a nervous breakdown.

Make sure that if you are an employer you design jobs that will give people personal satisfaction. Keep them busy and challenge them. Keep a variety of duties in your job description. Give good feeback and listen to their suggestions and concerns.

Keep the working environment good with adequate lighting and comfortable seating. Provide education on burnout to help the employee put everything into perspective.

You as an employer have an obligation for the conditions in which your employees work. Make sure that you do everything possible to help them succeed and be happy in their work environment.

Don’t overload them with the amount of customer contacts they need to make.
