Communication is people talking to people. If you are a good communicator, you have an attitude of caring instantly and this is sensed by others. You can project and practice the art of communicating. Always make sure that you have the ability to be questioned and tell the truth.

The population has the ability to recognize the truth. It should always be based on honesty. Here are a few simple rules to follow:

Tell it straight from the shoulder – Plain talk, make it real. Never talk down to your audience. Be careful not to practice foot in the mouth disease!

Be human. – Admit that you aren’t perfect. If you make a mistake, admit it.

Keep is Simple – Avoid superflous talk. Make it bare bones and simple to understand.

Look for drama – Let excitement shine through

Be a good listener – Get out and talk with your customers

Package your message in an attractive manner – Make it look interesting!

Keep it short – Present the nuggets. Everyone has limited time. Make theirs count by highlighting what is important

Avoid legal jargon – Don’t sell out to attorneys

Get feedback – Ask people what they think

When in person, in print , or online, the above points, if refined will work together to make you more interesting to your clients and they will perceive you as the “Great Communicator”.

Communication is the key to succes and wealth. Just about everyone wants success and wealth but misses the boat when they can’t clearly communicate. You have to be able to speak up for yourself, tell people what you are trying to accomplish and then ask us if we can help you. After all, we can’t read your mind, so, let us know. It will definitely make life easier.

  2. Great tips – thank you so much, Karen, for reminding people that it’s more important to state your message clearly and honestly than to get fancy with a lot of jargon or big words to impress.
    I enjoyed it.

  3. These are all good points! I especially like the legal-speak tip. Keep everything simple so we all can understand (saves words and paper, too.) :)

    Thank you,

If you really sit down and think about it, “communication” is a key factor in every aspect of our lives – even when we’re reading food labels at the grocery store!

We can all benefit from good, clear, concise communication as small business owners and online marketers. Long, drawn out, detailed communication will turn a lot of people off and turn them away.

I like to adhere to the K.I.S.S. principle: Keep It Short & Simple :-)

Evelyn, I agree simple is the key!!! This is a theme that people sometimes loose site of!

  7. Karen says:

Thanks Joyce. Yes I agree communications are essential. Sometimes it is as simple as just asking.

  8. These are great great tips! Much of which I didn’t know or never realized were so true!

“Keep it short – Present the nuggets. Everyone has limited time. Make theirs count by highlighting what is important” that one, I think is what most people for some reason do not understand. Especially if they are presenting and trying to get their point across in normal talking.

At one business meeting thingy, one guy had me sold on his product. But he kept talking and I kept walkin …. didn’t buy his thing at all.

As they say, a good presentation is like a girls miniskirt. Short enough to be interesting, but long enough to cover the goods.

Piotr, Loved the mini-skirt analogy!! Kept me smilling all day!!
